Abstract
In the present study, the change of superoxide anion production, hydrogen peroxide formation and Na^+, K^+-ATPase and Mg^2+-ATPase activities were investigated of the brain of mouse having received single electroconvulsive shock (ECS). Furthermore the effects of the serical ECS on the activity of Na^+, K^+-ATPase and Mg^2+-ATPase which known to play a vital role in the regulation of intracellular ionic composition, water balance, and membrane potentials has been investigated. The results were summarized as follow: 1. Single ECS increased the Na^+, K^+-ATPase and Mg^2+-ATPase activities to 86.3¡¾2.3 (nmole Pi/mg protein/min, mean¡¾S.D., n=3) and 105.6¡¾3.2, respectively, at 5 minutes after the electric stimulus. 2. Brain homogenates prepared from mice having received single ECS showed higher rate of cytochrome c reduction which was inhibited by superoxide dismutase compare with that of the control group. 3. The amounts hydrogen peroxide of single electroconvulsive shocked mouse brain showed highest values at tonic period and 3 minutes after the electric stimulus. 4. The serial ECS experiment showed that the activity of Na^+, K^+-ATPase increased to 127.2¡¾16.2 (nmole Pi/mg protein/min, mean¡¾S.D., n=3) on the sixth day but the activity of Mg^2+-ATP ase was not altered significantly.
